| 1364-00-00-Pereyaslavl | 1364 JL | Black death in Pereyaslavl. How the black death spread in Rus. | That autumn and that winter there was a great epidemic among the people: in Pereyaslavl people were dying 20 or 30 a day, and sometimes 60 or 70, and sometimes 100 or more. And the sickness was like this: as if a rogatina (bear spear) hit them behind the shoulder, or in the breast, or in the shoulder and when they got sick they started coughing blood and burning a fire[1], and then they sweated and shivered and lay there for a day or two, and rarely three days, and so they died; and others died because of the bubos, and the bubos were not in the same places in everyone: some on the neck, others under the cheek, others in the sinus area, others behind the shoulders, others on the thighs. All this was happening not only in the city of Pereyaslavl itself, but across its territory. And this doom came, sent from God upon the people, from the south from Bezezh to Novgorod, and then to Kolomna, and then to Pereyaslavl, and then for the next year to Moscow, and in all cities and lands there was a great and terrible epidemy, for they could not keep up with the living to bury the dead, for there were dead everywhere: in the cities and in the villages, in the houses and in the churches, and there was hardship and sorrow and weeping inconsolable; for there were few alive, but all dead, and five or six dead were buried in the pits, and sometimes ten and more; many mansions were empty, and in others there were one or two survivors, woman or man or few children. | Prodolzhenie letopisi po Voskresenskomu spisku in Polnoe Sobranie Russkikh Letopiseĭ, vol. 8, Moscow 2001: Iazyk Russkoĭ Kul’tury, p. 12. | Translation by Adrian Jusupovic |

| The same summer and winter [6925] there was a fearful plague among the people in Novgorod, and in Ladoga, in Russa, Porkhov, Pskov, Tver, Dmitrov, and in Torzhok, and throughout their districts and villages. And how can I relate the fearful and terrible misery that there was during the whole plague ? What grief the living had for the dead, for the deaths increased so in towns and villages that
the living had barely time to make the dead tidy for burial; so many died every day, that they had not time to bury them; and many houses were closed unoccupied. First of all it would hit one as if with a lance, choking, and then a swelhng would appear, or spitting of blood with shivering, and fire would burn one in all the joints of the body; and then the illness would overwhelm one; and many after lying in that illness died. But to many Christians God was merciful : they left this life entering the angelic order after receiving holy unction from the Vladyka. And two Posadniks died in the same order: Ivan Olexandrovich and Boris Vasilievich. And Vladyka Simeon with all the seven congregations, with the Christians and with crosses went round the whole of Great Novgorod, praying God and His Immaculate Mother to withhold the wrath of God ; and the Christians on horseback and afoot drew logs from the forest and built a church to St. Anastasia which was consecrated the same day by the Vladyka Simeon who performed a holy liturgy ; with the remainder of the logs, they erected a church to St. Ilya in Prussian Street. And the people of Novi-torg put up a church to St. Afanasi likewise in a single day, and performed a liturgy.
