Text translationEnglish translation of the text

That year [1230] there was an epidemic in Novgorod from famine. Some people killed their brothers and ate, and others ate the dead bodies, and others ate horses, and dogs, and cats, and others moss, and wych elm [1] leaves. All this was for our sins. Because of the number of the dead, there was then no one to bury the dead.

  1. In original text “илемъ”, what means Ulmus glabra Hudson, the wych elm or Scots elm: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ulmus_glabra
